Panthers (15) v. Sea Eagles (12)
Panthers Stadium | Thursday, 30 May 2019
Panthers
No Nathan Cleary? No problem. The Panthers prevailed against the Sea Eagles to make it back-to-back wins.
Liam Martin was a late inclusion and scored an impressive 45 points with a try, try assist and 35 tackles. The concern moving forward for Martin performance is his missed tackles and job security with Kikau set to return from illness. As owners, we were riding the roller-coaster of his performance while saving a trade in the process.
Fisher-Harris (64) returned to his early season form with his first 50+ performance since round 8, while Maloney (57) became the dominant halfback in the absence of Cleary and scored well. If you’re an inexperienced NRL Fantasy coach, don’t be tempted with Maloney’s score as it is inflated with the added responsibilities and general play kicking duties.
Brian To’o (48) looked very impressive with both his attacking and defensive capabilities and proved worth of our tag of “cheapie of the week”. What is even more eye-catching is that all the points he has generated over the past two games are purely from base stats.
Both Mansour and Edwards scored 43 points and had their best Fantasy performances of the season. With a massive drop in value for both players, they are two to watch (but not to prioritise) over the coming rounds if the Panthers performances continue to improve.
Sea Eagles
It was the big boys for the Sea Eagles racking up the majority of the NRL Fantasy points on offer with Addin Fonua-Blake (80) and Martin Taupau (55) leading the charge.
If you drafted in Taupau ahead of this week, it’s fair to say you got what you paid for here. If you took a punt on ‘AFB’, however, then you’re absolutely flying and would’ve been cheering on every one of his 7 tackle busts and 5 offloads.
Cust (59) did everything he could to position himself as a potential halves partner alongside DCE with a try, a try assist and four tackle busts to his name. This Round 12 tally seen another healthy price rise for owners with $117,000 to date.
Dylan Walker (36) regressed back to the mean with a mid-thirties score and Corey Waddell managed 55 points in 62 minutes.
One statistic from this game that will cost Waddell over the next couple of rounds was his headbutt on our man, Liam Martin.
Eels (26) v. Rabbitohs (14)
Bankwest Stadium | Friday, 31 May 2019
Eels
Whilst all eyes were on Adam Reynolds in this one, it was his opposite who stole the show. Mitchell Moses keeps his season average well and truly inside keeper range after a stunning 80-point performance.
Incredibly, Will Smith had zero kick-metres for the game as Moses completely took over with 351 kick-metres and three try assists.
Reed Mahoney (55) was another borderline keeper available in this game that didn’t disappoint. His trademark score off the back of a heavy defensive load would have delighted those who have owned from Round 1.
Blake Ferguson (23) backed up a poor score last week with another disappointing display, but his wing-partner (Sivo) managed to cross the line and meet his break even (42).
Maika Sivo has been one of the better buys this year with over $300k in price rises to his name.
Lastly, Manu Ma’u (51) has been damaging since his return with another solid score. However, Nathan Brown is expected back as early as next week and this may impact his minutes for the remainder of the season.
Rabbitohs
It was the two rookies, Tracey (78) and Brittain (51) who impressed for the Rabbitohs. Any coach who picked up one of these guys would be aware of the limited appearances they will likely get, however they will feel justified if they can get 2-3 runs over origin given their scoring capabilities.
His performance during the charity shield caught all NRL Fantasy coaches attention, however Corey Allan (10) has failed to deliver. Owned by 24.9% of coaches, Allan has been very underwhelming – especially in his preferred fullback position (3-game average of 19).
Coaches who decided to keep Sam Burgess for another week coming away with just 35 points. As a result, the former gun has now lost $161,000 this season and is on the chopping block for owners. Looking like a must-sell.
Liam Knight has flown under the radar as a solid Fantasy interchange option with a 3-game average of 42. Not one to pick-up now, but those who picked him up earlier in the season can give themselves a pat on the back with a nice profit of $157,000.
Bulldogs (10) v. Raiders (12)
ANZ Stadium | Saturday, 1 June 2019
Bulldogs
If you drafted in Corey Harawira-Naera the week after his tonne, our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.
Since that outstanding performance in Round 7, CHN has averaged just 38.3 points a game and was a late out ahead of this game which rubbed further salt to the wounds of those coaches who held onto him purely because he played Round 12. It can be a cruel, cruel game.
Looking at the stat sheet, there’s one guy that stands out to me and that’s young Jack Cogger (78).
We highlighted Cogger as a potential POD a couple of weeks ago and if you made the move – take a bow. The young half kicked for nearly 400 metres, bagged a try and made 28 tackles. Cogger now boasts a three-game average of (56.3) and has made $127,000 in price rises over his time in the top squad.
Tolman (43) was heavily owned coming into this week and tipped as one as the most reliable scoring options of the Round. Despite this, his low-forties effort suggests he didn’t purchase himself in NRL Fantasy this week.
Raiders
After returning from injury, John Bateman picked up where he left off scoring an impressive 62 points – with a try. One of the most popular players this season in NRL Fantasy, coaches will have to find a way to get him back in their squad as soon as possible.
CNK proved the doubters wrong with a fine 63 points – which included 296 running metres. For us, CNK remains a hold unless your upgrading to a premium WFB such as Ponga, Teddy or RTS.
Havili scored a solid 46 points from 62 minutes. If Havili can maintain these scores and minutes, he will make a tidy profit in excess of $150,000 over the next 6 rounds.
Popular cheapie, Hudson Young (30) was dropped to the interchange as both Tapine and Bateman returned to the starting line-up. Coaches who traded-in Young were always aware it was a short-term move, but he has made a solid $206,000 in his time in first grade. He is now a sell this week after he is set to miss at least five weeks through suspension due to an eye gouge on Aiden Tolman.
Titans (4) v. Cowboys (6)
Cbus Super Stadium | Sunday, 2 June 2019
Titans
The Titans certainly missed Michael Gordon in this one after two missed conversions ultimately cost them the game.
Mitch Rein was coming off a 57 and 69 in his last two outings, however failed to show up when it mattered most with a sub-par score of 42. This score was 10 points shy of his season average and stung all coaches who were riding along on the Rein train in hope of another 50+ performance.
With reports that Peats is set to return as early as next, many will be looking to cash in on the $220k in price rises and move Rein on to an established keeper such as Cameron Smith or Cameron McInnes.
Bryce Cartwright (27) owners will breathe a sigh of relief this week as they can now finally trade out the inconsistent 2RF. It’s not all bad though, as he too has made some $218k this year – which is actually more than I expected before looking this up.
Jai Whitbread was another that was well-owned in this game, however 18 minutes of game time simply wasn’t enough for the young prop to put together a decent score.
Cowboys
Jason “The Beast” Taumalolo – take a bow! His incredible 103 point performance included a try, 204 running metres, 8 tackle breaks and 41 tackles. This performance isn’t a surprise though, and is the main reason why most coaches slapped the captain armband on him. He has currently got a 3 game average of 85.7 and is the form player of the competition. It will be awfully tempting for coaches to leave the armband on him this weekend.
Coaches who picked up Dunn might have been disappointed to see him named in the CTR position, however he still scored a respectable 34 points from base stats. He might become a solid short-term cash cow during the Origin period.
Kahu scored his second highest score of the season with 35 points – which tells you all you need to know about his Fantasy relevance this year. With Round 12 over and his break even higher than his average, he is definitely a sell this week.
